The District Attorney is elected every four years and his duties include prosecuting people who are accused of breaking the law in the State of Maine. When a crime is committed and the police charge a suspect, the charge is forwarded to the District Attorney's office for prosecution. After the District Attorney's office approves the charges, the case will go to one of three types of courts. Misdemeanor and traffic cases go to District Court. Felonies go to Superior Court. Jury trials to Superior Court. If a person accused of a misdemeanor crime wants a jury trial, the case can be transferred to Superior Court. Cases involving crimes committed by people under the age of 18 go to Juvenile Court.
