The Register is elected every four years and has the overall responsibility for the operation of the office and performs duties as described in 33, M.R.S.A., section 604.
DUTIES: Accept instruments for recording on a daily basis. Attest to copies of instruments as needed. Account for all fees generated to the County Treasurer and State of Maine. Budget for and administratively operate the Registry of Deeds' Office. Assign duties to and supervise the Register of Deeds' Staff. Work with the public, attorneys, surveyors and engineers to answer their questions and provide general assistance.
Aroostook County's Records date from 1808 in the Southern District and 1846 in the Northern District. The records include Real Estate, UCC Financing, statements, and surveys.
To record a deed, it has to be signed and notarized by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public and all names must be printed or typed under the signature. Records have to be made from original or certified copies.
All records (except transfer tax forms) are open to the public.
Aroostook County's computerized records started January 1, l985 and a computer is available to the public.

- Title searches or transfer tax information are the only data not available through this office
INFORMATION NEEDED TO RECORD A DEED:
- Maine State Transfer Tax form (confidential - information available through town office)
- State charge $4.40/thousand (shared equally by buyer and seller - Towns exempt from transfer tax)
MYLAR PLAN: To record Mylar Plan is $15.00 + $3.00 surcharge, unless a municipality or state.
