Welcome

The Public Works Department is tasked with engineering, building and maintaining local roads within the Unorganized Territory of Aroostook County, including 19.86 miles of paved roads and 18.75 miles of gravel surface roads and their drainage systems. This work is accomplished through long term Time and Material maintenance contracts with three (3) contractors, as well as individual contractors to do specific fixed cost projects.

In addition, the County provides winter maintenance on 30.58 miles of local roads and an additional 24.68 miles of major and minor collector roads. These roads are plowed through contracts with the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT), various municipalities and four (4) different contractors.

The local road network ranges from the Pelletier Road on the T17R5/New Canada Town Line to the North, the Oxbow Road between Route 11 and the T9R5/Oxbow Plantation Town Line to the West, the West Gate Road in Connor to the East and the Norris Road within sight of the Penobscot River to the South.

The County of Aroostook participates in the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Small Community Grant Program to replace malfunctioning septic systems creating water quality problems.

Public Works is also tasked with the operation of a Construction and Demolition Debris transfer station located in T17R4, and as a joint owner of septage spreading sites in T17R5 and Nashville Plantation, provides representation on the various boards controlling these sites.
